Expectations of ACRC Rowers

VISION
Our Vision is to remain a highly respected rowing club that:
  • Supports the success of a Juniors rowing program for all levels
  • Promotes club unity and displays community spirit and service
  •  Encourages balance between competition and sportsmanship
  • Maintains a highly qualified volunteer base to execute operational and coaching duties.

MISSION
Arch City Rowing Club is a 501c3 that exists to promote high school rowing in the greater Columbus area. To do this, we provide the settings, facilities, equipment, and organization to:
  • Offer a competitive Juniors program for high school rowers
  • Implement a whole body approach to training including on and off water practices, cross-fit, yoga, and   boxing
  • Inspire athletes to be competitive while maintaining camaraderie and having fun
  • Engage in community service

TRAINING, PRACTICE AND RACE EXPECTATIONS
  • All athletes are expected to attend every practice and race.
  • Absences from practice should be communicated to coaches, as far ahead of time as possible, both verbally and by email or text.
  • An absence from practice or racing is excused if an athlete misses school due to illness or has a family emergency.
  • Good sportsmanship is mandatory. Rowers are expected to accept victory and defeat with grace, support one another, and cheer on your teammates! The content of your character really shows in competitive situations.
  • Placement in boats will be determined by the coaching staff and will factor in:  attendance, attitude, erg scores, overall performance and seat racing.

ROWER AND COXSWAIN EXPECTATIONS
  • Each rower accepts the responsibility of being part of a team of 5 or 9 serious athletes in a boat.
  • Time management is the duty of the rower. You expect your teammates and coaches to attend practices and they expect you to attend.
  • Athletes are expected to maintain a nutritious diet that limits fast food and sugary beverages.
  • Under no circumstances are athletes permitted to consume alcohol or use drugs.
  • Varsity rowers are expected to treat their commitment to the team the same as any school varsity sport.
  • Varsity rowers are expected to be role models for the team – encouraging, guiding and teaching the novices.
A major hallmark of rowing is the interdependence of teamwork. Individual absences could very well mean the difference between the rest of their boat going out on the water, or staying on land. Everyone who joins crew realizes they must respect the commitment the rest of the team has made in order for everyone to succeed. This is an invaluable lesson to be learned at a young age.

In more realistic terms, if your child misses practice, it not only jeopardizes their seat in the boat, but the boat as a whole. And a boat affected is a team affected.

Please encourage and respect your child's decision to be part of a team, which welcomes and appreciates their contribution, and help them develop through the sport they love.
